Grasslands

Since 1998, The Nature Conservancy has been working with China's local, provincial and national government agencies, local communities and other institutions to provide advice and strategic direction on protecting China's rich natural resources.

Nature reserves, of which there are some 2300 in China, are highly restrictive in respect of human use, often lacks capacity for effective management, and only a small handful are in areas of critical biological importance.

The national parks model we envision will accommodate the needs of people and allow controlled tourism and other compatible development activities, while prohibiting environmentally damaging infrastructure such as dams or mines in core areas of valuable biological diversity.

We are piloting the national parks model in Yunnan Province and in June 2007, we successfully established China's first national park at Pudacuo.

Pudacuo will meet the standards for national parks established by The World Conservation Union (IUCN) — and also advance both protection and sustainable development of this ecologically significant section of Yunnan Province.

With the establishment of Pudacuo National Park, the next phase of our work begins implementing our vision of a system of protected areas that provides living landscapes for both biodiversity and people.

Our goal is to have an additional two national parks designated in Yunnan over the next three years. In this effort, we will develop park management plans, including zoning areas for community development, tourism activities, and core conservation areas. We will also launch a system of education and training for park and reserve managers in Yunnan and throughout China to ensure effective management and transfer of skills and knowledge.
