Five Conservancy Scientists Celebrate Women’s Role in Protecting Water

As freshwater scientists working for The Nature Conservancy, we are passionate about finding ways to ensure that women everywhere have access to clean water.

In many societies, water is at the core of women's daily responsibilities — millions of women and girls spend their days collecting and preparing water for cooking, cleaning, drinking and maintaining sanitation.

While the search for clean water in the U.S. doesn't stop us from working or attending school, we are still utterly dependent on clean water for our health, our happiness, our nourishment and our families.

We are raising awareness of fresh water as a women's issue. Please join us in supporting The Nature Conservancy's focus on women who are keeping waters secure and nature in good working order — from freshwater scientists like us, to farmers and fishers, to our rapidly growing crop of future conservationists.

“I remember the lake in Sebago, Maine where I used to go to summer camp. It’s a huge glacial kettle hole filled with freshwater so clean that it’s still the source of drinking water for Portland, Maine.” — Laura McCarthy, Senior Policy Advisor for Fire and Forest Restoration, New Mexico

I miss water! I live in the high desert and although we hve some creeks here, they dry up in the middle of summer, just when you need to hear them bubble and see them sparkle the most. Lucky for us the water we use daily comes from deep in the ground and does not dry up like the surface water. So our physical needs are met but the spiritual and emotional needs have to wait for the spring snow melt.

Growing up drinking the most delicious water from the Sebago Lake in Maine to having amazing well water living in the state of NH, I have always been grateful for clean water. Starting my business, AffirmWater I wanted to get people drinking more of our precious resource, water from a safe vessel. Now, I am more empowered and aware than ever, the need to protect this most precious resource to ensure it is available for future generations as well as making clean water and accesibility available to all on our planet as I do believe water is a basic human right. Thank you for all you do!

My frontyard reaches to the shourline of the great St Lawrence River here on the 45th Parallel. Somedays you sit and ponder other days it washes over you to cleanse your spirit.
She(the river)is powerful and will carry you away if you do not respect her strength.
