Act Now to Save New York Forests

New York
Climate Change, Land & Water Conservation, Lands

Call on state leaders to protect New York’s forests.

New York’s forests are some of our state’s greatest assets. They not only reduce the threat of droughts and floods, and combat climate change, but they are also critical to our communities. In fact, the forest product industry employs 100,000 New Yorkers and contributes $22 billion to our economy.

But New York’s forests are at risk from development, which can undermine our economy, environment, climate, and communities.

The Nature Conservancy supports legislation called Empire Forests for the Future, which will reduce forest loss and encourage landowners to manage their lands to provide wildlife habitat, produce sustainable timber, capture carbon, and improve water quality. This legislation will allow more landowners to participate in forest relief programs and provide more effective incentives to encourage sustainable forest management.

Contact your legislators and Governor Andrew Cuomo and urge them to ensure the Empire Forests for the Future Initiative is included in the State Budget. Take action by March 30 to make a difference and stand for New York’s forests.

Stand for New York Forests

Dear

I am asking you to support the Empire Forests for the Future Initiative in the state budget.

New York's forests are some of our state's greatest assets. They provide wildlife habitat, jobs, and help combat climate change. But currently there is pressure to develop our forests, and our state's forest stewardship and property tax relief programs are lacking. We can do more for our forests and forest landowners by including the Empire Forests for the Future Initiative in the state budget.

This Initiative will reform the current forest tax law to reduce forest loss and encourage landowners to manage their lands to provide wildlife habitat, produce sustainable timber, capture carbon, and improve water quality.

As a constituent, I urge you to work to ensure the Empire Forests for the Future Initiative is included in this year's state budget.

Sincerely,
